The guitar glides through plucked and drummed rhythms, pulling the listener into the “Cat o’ Nine Tails Waltz.” The tune, by guitarist/composer Sweeney Schragg, is on jazz trio Quasimodal’s sophomore CD of original tunes, Discordia Concors, which has its official release at Kuumbwa Jazz Center on Thursday (October 29).
With the upcoming CD release in mind, Schragg agreed to answer a few questions for Weekend Santa Cruz….

There is plenty to do in this Hitchcockian town, home to the inspiration for the Bates Motel. You can enter The Twilight Zone, masquerade in a mini-aquarium or even watch big-screen zombies at midnight. Ghosts and ghoulies can get their groove on all around Santa Cruz County during this week.

Music that moves. That’s what Barry Green intends to perform Friday (October 23) at UC Santa Cruz. But the professor, who has taught double bass at the university since 1996, is pushing beyond basic rhythm.
“I wanted to experiment with finding a way for an audience to break the tradition of sitting there and essentially listening with you head, with your intellect,” said Green, who plans to get people out of their seats using video clips of dance between pieces to “put music into the audience’s bodies….”

The digital age has been good to the duo behind Black Gold. First, Craigslist helped Than Luu find his way back into music. Then iTunes bumped the band onto the map by picking their song “Detroit” as a Single of the Week in October 2008. The upbeat tune with downbeat lyrics received more than 425,000 downloads and has been remixed by DJs across the country.
Even so, the Brooklyn-based band is more into live performance than taped perfection. “We really want people to see us live,” Luu said. “We’re musicians playing the songs. We’re not crazy light shows and tracks.”
Luu and musical partner Eric Ronick bring Black Gold to The Crepe Place on Sunday….

If nothing else, the 21st annual Pacific Rim Film Festival is eclectic. Where else can you see a sci-fi film about water rights in Mexico on the same day as a documentary about Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color to serve in the United States Congress.
The seven day festival, which runs October 16 through 21 at three Santa Cruz County locations, offers 16 free flicks, many with after-film discussions by the filmmakers….
