Films to make the weekend Greek

Greek food, Greek music, Greek dancing, Greek arts and crafts. All that’s missing from the 29th annual Greek Festival, held September 11-13 at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, is Greek film. A quick trip to the video store for one of these four Grecian goodies will start a Mediterranean staycation right. Opa!
Zorba the Greek: Greek peasant Alexis Zorba (Anthony Quinn) teaches a young English writer named Basil (Alan Bates) about the joys of life. Based on the book by Nikos Kazantzakis, this black-and-white 1964 Academy Award-nominated film shows Greece as it once was. Listen to the soundtrack by noted composer Mikis Theodrakis to be instantly transported.
Never on Sunday: This 1960 Greek version of Pygmalion has an American scholar (Jules Dassin, who also directed and wrote the film) trying to civilize an independent member of the world’s oldest profession (Melina Mercouri). Of course, the woman in question has her own ideas of how she should live her life in this black-and-white comedy. Once again, the music — this time by Manos Hatzidakis — brings one to the island chain.
Shirley Valentine: Greece becomes the destination for a middle-aged English housewife (Pauline Collins) fleeing the domesticity of her every day existence in this 1989 adaptation of a stage play. Again, the Greek joy for life infuses this film, along with the country’s beauty.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding: This romantic comedy may not have stunning shots of Greece, but it does have lots of Windex. Nia Vardalos (who also wrote the film) stars as Toula, a 30-year-old Greek-American who falls in love with a WASP played by John Corbett. As Toula’s father says, “There are two kinds of people – Greeks, and everyone else who wish they was Greek.”
